Pitfalls of moving to Oregon.
One of the first frustrations for us to encounter was the finding of what might be reliable contractors. They tend to be few and far between. Most of the construction contractors we've had dealings with had no concept what "Customer Service" is all about. Shoddy workmanship, no sense of time, and no pride in their work seemed to be very prevailant.
Our first dealing with a contractor was with B&D Enterprises, of Grants Pass, Or. They poured our garage cement foundation, 3.2 inches out of square, they took more days off work than they came to work. They admittedly had no idea how to pour two steps out of the front door. So Beware of this one.
Our second experience was with Matlock Construction, of Shady Cove. Dan did a fine job doing the Dozer work, but he forgot the agreed upon price. Once finding out that we moved from California, the price immediately doubled. Time to raise another caution Flag!.
Over the years, we've had dealings with many Business establishments who are out to make a quick deal, but don't know what Customer Service is about. This concept is not too uncommon in this part of Oregon. You can walk into a large Store like LOWES, look through the isles and never find a person to ask for help on finding something. When having something ordered special, like furniture at the Oak Furniture Warehouse, once you pay for the item and expecting shipment within 8 weeks, you never hear from them again. Went to the store 10 weeks after order was placed, tried to cancel the entire order, we were informed that we can't cancel.Once they have your money, they don't care about anything else. So in the future, we buy furniture somewhere else. Many times you make arrangements to have things delivered on a specific date and they don't show up until days later. Tried to have our RV garage door adjusted by American Garage Doors. Supposed to be here on a given date. They didn't show up until an entire week later. They had no reason for the tardiness other than being too busy. The outfits never think to call you if they can't keep an appointment.
So BEWARE, prospective Oregon movers. These are some of the problems you also may encounter. Despite your diligence in finding the right outfit to do business with, eventually this will happen to you. Don't foresake, there are many good establishments with good work ethics and pride in their work. It's just a matter of finding them.
